| Loki was a beautiful lab mix, He was Amy's first puppy and traveled with her from Montana around the US till finally settling down in the country in South Carolina where he would live out his days, only his days were cut short. Loki came to rest on earth when he consumed Antifreeze. This was a problem that had happened before in the area before we had moved in but we were unaware of that until a rash of anti-freeze deaths took many neighborhood animals and another person let us know this has happened before. We notified authorities but unless we could prove (and you never can) that a particular person actually fed it to an animal there is nothing they can do. We were made aware that local illegal hunters were the suspect as the dogs would bark and either give them away, or scare away prey. Evidently this kind of thing is pretty common, but almost impossible to control. Loki was put to sleep rather than let to suffer a painful death which Antifreeze poisoning brings on within 12 hours of consuming just 1 teaspoon. He is remembered fondly and never leaves our hearts.
We moved from that place very shortly after the animal deaths. We put so much money into trying to save the dogs and treating a mysterious and badly broken leg on the one and only dog who did not consume antifreeze, that we were unable to pay our mortgage and car payments on our brand new home/land and it was repossessed. We let it go without fight as in our hearts we could not live in a place where our beloved babies met such horrible deaths and we were not the first or only ones to have lost fur children that way. |
